On March 22, 2019, the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus brought The Brits Are Coming to Davies Symphony Hall, the second-to-last concert of its 41st season. BroadwayWorld’s Steve Murray reviewed it the next day.
The show
Backed by a five-piece band, the chorus moved through two acts of British music and culture. Murray describes an opening cameo by “Queen Elizabeth” and her corgis, Scottish and Irish folk songs, and music by the Beatles, Queen, Adele, Sting and Elton John, with guest performers from the African American Shakespeare Company and comic choreography by Steve Valdez. A rendition of Radiohead’s “Creep” offered a more somber moment.
The verdict
Murray enjoyed the spectacle and humor, but felt the evening leaned on soloists and wished for more of the full chorus, which he praised for its power and elegance.
