On June 26, 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court let the ruling against Proposition 8 stand, and marriage equality returned to California. Two days later, on June 28, Prop 8 plaintiffs Kris Perry and Sandy Stier were married at San Francisco City Hall. Moments after the wedding, the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus sang for them.
A Song Premiered Days Before
The Chorus sang an excerpt of “San Francisco” from Andrew Lippa’s oratorio I Am Harvey Milk. The Chorus had given the work its world premiere only days earlier at its 35th anniversary concert, Harvey Milk 2013. It also sang “Give ’Em Hope.”
With the newlyweds were Mayor Ed Lee; Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign and founder of the American Foundation for Equal Rights; Oscar-winning producer Bruce Cohen; and Oscar-winning Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black.
Filmed by a Chorus Member
SFGMC member Sean Chapin filmed and edited the video. It includes never-before-seen footage from inside City Hall as the ruling came down, the celebration in the Castro that afternoon, and the Perry–Stier wedding.
