The chorus’s 35th Anniversary Concert, Harvey Milk 2013: Living the Legacy, commemorates the historic connection between Harvey and the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus.
Living the Legacy features the World Premiere of “I Am Harvey Milk” by Broadway composer Andrew Lippa. This dramatic new work challenges each of us to find a part of Harvey in ourselves.
Three years in the making, Harvey Milk 2013: Living the Legacy is a musical celebration honoring the death of one icon, and the birth of another.

A premiere with a lasting legacy
The June 2013 premiere at the Nourse Theatre marked the Chorus’s 35th anniversary under Artistic Director Dr. Timothy Seelig. Andrew Lippa wrote the work’s music and words, and Laura Benanti was among its performers. The San Francisco Bay Times’ anniversary retrospective reported that the original cast recording, released that October, reached No. 2 on iTunes within hours.
The work continued well beyond its first San Francisco performances. In a June 2018 Bay Area Reporter interview, Seelig said that “I Am Harvey Milk” had received more than 30 productions around the world. In a 2025 interview with the same newspaper, Benanti recalled her relationship with SFGMC and described the Chorus as “very near and dear to my heart.”
