In 2019, The Hollywood Reporter reported that MTV Documentary Films, the new unit led by former HBO documentary chief Sheila Nevins, had acquired Gay Chorus Deep South.

From Tribeca to theaters

David Charles Rodrigues’s film premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival, where it won the audience award for best documentary feature. It follows the chorus through Southern states with anti-LGBTQ laws and builds to a concert at a Southern Baptist megachurch in South Carolina. Nevins planned a fall release to position the film for awards season.

“These brave men break barriers with song and continue to sing.”

— Sheila Nevins, as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter

The film was produced and financed by Rausch Street Films, with producers Bud Johnston and Jesse Moss and executive producers Brian Chesky, James Goode and Tony Hogqvist. Rodrigues said the deal meant the whole world would get to hear the chorus’s message.
