Former Music Director
Music Director, August 1985–June 1989
Gregg Tallman led SFGMC during one of the most devastating periods of the AIDS epidemic, when performance became an act of remembrance, witness and mutual care. He guided the chorus from August 1985 through June 1989 while members mourned friends and fellow singers and continued to make ambitious music.
During Tallman’s tenure, SFGMC commissioned David Conte’s Invocation and Dance, among the early major choral works to respond to AIDS, and collaborated with San Francisco Opera. The chorus also reached national audiences as it marked its tenth anniversary. Tallman’s final appearance with SFGMC came at the 1989 GALA Choruses Festival in Seattle.
