Music Director, June 1982–December 1985

Ernie Veniegas became SFGMC’s music director in June 1982, as the chorus worked through the financial aftermath of its national tour and entered the first years of the AIDS crisis. His tenure brought continuity and artistic focus during a period of profound uncertainty for the organization and its community.

Veniegas led the chorus in its War Memorial Opera House debut in April 1983 and sustained an active concert life while SFGMC helped nurture the growing gay choral movement. By the end of his tenure in December 1985, the chorus was prepared to enter a new era of commissioning, collaboration and public witness.
